EARTH DAY Is Everyday - Simple SWAPS To SAVE The PLANET + Your WALLET

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

China Walls, Hawaii

Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22nd) various organizations, student groups + social media encourages action + participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development + climate solutions.

But, I say that everyday is a good day to bring attention to some easy sustainable swaps you can make on the daily. These swaps make for a more sustainable habit + most of them make your day to day a bit easier! I've also included other ways to honor Mother Earth.

Simple SWAPS

Below are a few links to some of my favorite power cords.

I'm a big fan of LUCKY DOG products. We definitely don’t want to reuse dog bags, but opting for an eco-friendly option that uses recycled materials is the next best thing! Check out some of their quality biodegradable, recycled toys, dog bags + more here.

Start your own garden if you have the space or even a little kitchen countertop
herb garden from the brands below:

Check out my favorite organic compressed soil here.

INDOOR

OUTDOOR

Below are a few of my favorite essential oil diffusers, natural candles, palo santo sticks + matches.

Natural Candles

Palo Santo Sticks (Sustainably Harvested)
Terracotta Smudging Burn Bowl (Tree Planted with Every Order)

Matches
Electric Candle Lighter (USB Rechargeable)

Reusable WATER BOTTLES + Travel MUGS

Ditch plastic + commit to using less single use plastic. Use a refillable water bottle every day.

Why?

Using plastic may lead to leaching + toxicity. Plastic contains chemicals + they can leach into water, especially if they are being transported or kept in hot climates.

Each plastic water bottle leeches harmful chemicals into our environment along the way as it decomposes. Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol (BPA), the chemical used to make the plastic hard + clear.

My family + I have multiple reusable water bottles + travel mugs for our beverages from the family + employee owned brand, Klean Kanteen. We always keep them filled + in our fridge for easy access. They hold 32 oz of water + we never leave the house without them.

Reusable PRODUCE BAGS

Chances are you’ve seen those little mesh produce bags at your local grocery store. These are another great sustainable swap because they are so small but can hold quite a bit of produce. Another easy swap is opting to purchase loose produce whenever possible, this saves on plastic packaging. Also, don’t forget your reusable shopping totes! I love the brand, Wowe Lifestyle for these items.

Glass TUPPERWARE + JARS

Say goodbye to ziplock bags! Use glass tupperware + glass jars whenever you can. They are reusable + keeps your fridge super organized. You can always purchase these silicone stretch lids that take place of toxic Saran Wrap. They are dishwasher safe + reusable.

Below are links to my favorite glass tupperware + jars:

Reuse your glass bottles! Glass is the most consistently + reliably recycled. You don't need to spend a fortune at the Container Store or elsewhere to purchase glass jars, Mason jars etc. I love to collect + rinse off the labels from glass jars from tomato sauce, olives + other items, put them in the dishwasher to really get them clean + use them for leftovers or to display grains, rices, pastas etc. in a visually pleasing + organized way!

Refillable SHOWER ESSENTIALS

Body wash dispensers are a great way to conserve on packaging + over consumption of traditional body wash products. Switching to bar soap + bar shampoos are another way to conserve on plastic consumption, it’s also just as easy to get in the habit to use these types of soaps. The following brands make clean ingredient bar soap (and more). I find that the bar soap lasts so much longer than the liquid. I'm a big fan of the brand, VIORI + THE YELLOW BIRD.

More Ways To Honor MOTHER EARTH

VOLUNTEER

Volunteer with your friends + family in your community on a regular basis. Participate in beach, trail + park clean ups. Work in a community garden or farm. Imagine if we all did this at least once a month around the globe?!?

COMPOST

Compost or commit to tossing plant waste in a compost bin
like the one I linked below:

Use A CLOTHESLINE

Use a clothesline more + your dryer less in the warmer months. I linked a few great options below:

Opt For AMAZON DROP-OFF

Amazon is not going away anytime soon, so for those who choose to use their service, this is a easy but huge way to do your part for Mother Earth. When making an Amazon return often times there are available drop off locations like Kohl’s + Whole Foods market. If you live near a drop point, always opt for that instead of shipping the item back. It reduces couriers on the road + these Amazon partners send the returns back in bulk. Plus you get your refund as soon as you drop it off, it’s a win-win!
