  • RESOURCE GUIDE For California Fire Victims + Ways To Help

It’s hard to truly gather the words to describe what has transpired the last few days in LA. I lived in California from 2009 - 2018 in various parts of town including Glendale, Sherman Oaks, Los Feliz, Malibu, Calabasas + Thousand Oaks. I know all these areas extremely well. I heard back from most of my friends + my Uncle John who lives in California who are all physically okay. I worry for them + their children mentally as the days go on + their reality set in. Since the fires, I've been in "I'm not there, but how can I help" mode on how I can personally help. I've put aside boxes to individuals of my own clothing that I'm removing off my Poshmark to match up with those in need. By Thursday there were Google Docs made by friends where anybody in need of clothing could submit their info for tops, pants, pjs, undies + bras for families + individuals. I've added all the reputable Google Docs I could find below which are a brilliant resource because they are constantly being updated in real time. SMOKE + FIRE SUPPORT Practical Tips for Detox Support + Resilience The air + water in the affected areas is quite toxic at this point as many of the homes + properties that burned are older + full of asbestos, lead + more. Having a GOOD air filter + water filter (at least for drinking water) is PARAMOUNT.  These air purifiers are portable + can work in an most temporary living spaces like an AirBnB, RV, hotel etc.   Click HERE  to shop the above Air Purifiers  + more clean air products.   My favorite air purifier brand is AIR DOCTOR . Per Dr. Tyna, the good people at Jaspr have increased the discount on their air filters by $200 OFF . If you don’t have access to a high-quality air purifier, you can make a simple DIY air cleaner using a box fan + a high-efficiency furnace filter (rated MERV 13 or higher) . Attach the filter securely to the back of the fan, with the airflow direction arrows pointing toward the fan. This setup can help reduce particulate matter in your indoor air for a low cost. These water filters are portable + can work in an most temporary living spaces like an AirBnB, RV, hotel etc. Click HERE to shop the above Water Filtration Systems + more clean water products. My favorite water filtration brands are WATERDROP + AquaTru . SUPPLEMENTS + Ways To Support Your Body MAGNESIUM - Most people in the US are magnesium deficient + stress + toxins chew up your magnesium reserves. Magnesium is critical for keeping your nervous system regulated as well as for keeping smooth muscle (like that which lines your vessels) relaxed. Now would be a good time to consider supplementation. You really can't overdo it with magnesium, if you take too much you will get loose stools. Magnesium malate is a great form in this situation. MANAGE YOUR CORTISOL - When your body is not processing oxygen well, especially if there's toxins in the air, you may very well feel like freaking out. It's how your system reacts to oxygen deprivation. If your anxiety is up, it's not just because this is a devastating situation, it's also because you are under oxygenated. Ever freak out as you ascend a mountain or the plane is taking off? That's oxygen deprivation in the brain hitting the panic button. I say this only so you know what is going on, which may help you calm yourself more readily. SUPPORT YOUR ADRENALS - When stress hits, always support your adrenals. SALT - Salt for hydration. Salt for adrenal support. Salt is so incredibly helpful in so many ways. Electrolytes if you have them, sea salt with a sprinkle of sugar if you don't (a bit of sugar helps the salt absorb) . NASAL RINSE - Using a saline nasal rinse is an excellent way to flush out fine particles + toxins that may accumulate in your nasal passages from wildfire smoke. A saline spray or rinse helps clear mucus, reduce irritation + keep your airways hydrated. You can use a pre-made saline spray or prepare your own saline solution at home. To make your own rinse: dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt + a pinch of baking soda in 8 ounces of warm distilled or boiled water (cooled to a safe temperature) . Use a nasal spray bottle, neti pot, or bulb syringe to gently rinse your nasal passages. Regular rinsing, especially after being outdoors, can help reduce respiratory irritation + improve comfort. WASH YOUR SHEETS REGULARLY - Smoke particles can cling to your hair, skin, + clothes, as well as settle on bedding + furniture. Changing your pillowcases + sheets regularly can help reduce your exposure to these particles, especially if you’ve been outdoors. For best results, use warm or hot water for laundering + consider a shower before bed to avoid transferring smoke residue to your bedding. This simple step can help you sleep better + breathe easier. Click HERE for a shoppable list of emergency / disaster relief items. Note: I did not post non-perishable food + water, but make sure you have a 3 day supply of food per person + a 1 gallon of water per day per person. Also, pack some cash (make sure to have small denominations as well) + copies of your passport. I put the copies on the clipboard in a ziplock bag. If you wear glasses, an extra pair would be good to have. Also, don't forget covered tennis shoes. MY Affiliate Partners ACTIVE SKIN REPAIR - Join Logan Barris, Active Skin Repair + I in Supporting Los Angeles Fire Relief Efforts - If you know any first responders or individuals affected by the fires who could benefit from Active Skin Repair, please let me know. They would be honored to send FREE complimentary products to support their recovery + care. Please help me drive awareness + support for this critical cause. LUV AJ - BOGO Sale for Palisades Fire Essential Aid - Amanda, owner of jewelry brand, LUV AJ lost her home in the fires. In order to start aiding some relief for our community, Amanda is launching a  BOGO Sale  where you can BUY 1, GET 1 item FREE ( equal or lesser value) + will be donating the proceeds to the  Essential Aid Go Fund Me  which was started by Amanda's dear friend Birdie who she grew up with in the Palisades. In fact, FEMA just kicked the folks in North Carolina out of their temporary housing + out into a snow storm. I have no words. Let's just all help where we can. • Journaling + Manifesting. Where Do I Begin?

One of the best things you can do for your growth + manifesting your dreams is journaling. I highly suggest you buy a "Manifestation Book" (a book with empty pages you can write in) that speaks to you. There are so many inspirational "Manifestation Books" out there to help you get started. I have an Erin Condren Life Planner™ which was gifted to me by my parents...get yours HERE . Besides working with a therapist, virtually for the past two years, this journal or "manifestation book" is a wonderful gift that has really made an impact on my mental health + growth. What I do is take 10 minutes a day to write down everything I want in my daily life (day to day) + my future self. Once you gift your higher self an outlet to speak, it doesn't stop! It starts implanting affirmations of your future successes to write down now + speak into existence. Make sure you use a pencil as there is something magical about this natural tool when it comes to manifesting + speaking to the universe. I've added a few more of my favorite journals + life planners here (or) just tap the image below to shop them. Here are some tips on mindfulness + journaling: GRATITUDE Section As you may already know, as you celebrate more, you receive more, therefor I recommend you start your day by listing the things you are grateful for in the Gratitude section. I start by listing 3 things that answer the question, "What am I grateful for today?" which often includes, family, health, a roof over my head, a good sleep at night, etc. In one of my journal entries I had the following..... I am grateful for: 1) How far I have come since beginning virtual therapy during the pandemic / quarantine. 2) My entire family + their continued health + wellness. 3) My Dad having a safe surgery getting a pacemaker + him focusing on his nutrition + exercise. I am grateful to all his doctors. 4) My Mom's early treatment by having two safe surgeries for her lumpectomies + radiation. I am grateful to her doctors, therapists + the kind people at the breast center. I always have to remind myself how far I have come + that I am exactly where I need to be. Just about a year ago, I was really in a dark place + struggling with my OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Anxiety + Depression. I was once that person who lived solely in this space where highs are high + lows are low. There are ups + downs + that is certainly life, but moving through my day with mindfulness + intention is much more calming to live in. I recognize that I am (we all are) a never ending work in progress , so I am really learning to love the process of growth because it is so ever changing. Reflect + remind yourself that you have come a long way! You don't need to be anywhere else except right here, right now. POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS Section This section refers to my intentions for the day. Some mornings, I can feel "off" as soon as I wake up. But this, I have found, is because my intentions for the day are not consciously established. This section answers the question, "What positive things do I want to happen today?" Where you can list 3 things such as, spend quality time with my family, one on one time with a loved one, be productive at work, take some self care time for me: a bubble bath or get a massage etc. Something I do want to say on this topic is that life is not always a To Do List. Stop measuring your days in terms of how productive you are. Measure your days in how present you are. Are you practicing mindfulness? Are you present in every action? Act + speak with intention. ENTHUSIASM Section This section reminds me of what I really like doing + focuses my attention only to the things that fill my heart with joy. The energy spent during the day is our most important resource, so by evaluating again what I love doing, I make sure I spend as little energy on the things I don't like. This section answers the question, "What makes me enthusiastic today?" , where I list all the things that are cool about that day. What makes me feel good + inspired? To this section I want to add: "How are you really feeling today?" Honor your feelings. Observe everything in front of you. Or even close your eyes + meditate for a bit. What do you see? How does it make you feel? I include in this section how I want to feel for the day so, I put the intention out there (no matter what) that I intend for my day to be peaceful, zen, focused etc. I also sometimes call this my Vibes Section too. Here, I think about what are some self care fun things I am enthusiastic about to include in my day. This could be: 1) Listen to my favorite podcast 2) Read a few pages or a chapter of the book I am currently enjoying. 3) Music - I love to set the tone of my day with music, playlists. Even carve out time if I am working to stop + stretch my body through an entire song. 4) Workout - workouts do not have to be long. There are even so many short + sweet 6 minute workouts you can do if you don't have time on certain days. Here are some of my quick workouts. Or even better, get outside + go for a short walk or hike! DETERMINATION Section This section is self motivating + slowly gets me into the mood of achieving the goals of the day. This is the section where I list 3 things that I absolutely need to achieve that day + I answer the question, "What am I determined to do today?" In this section, think about things you want to let go of + things you want to let in. RESULTS Section In this section, I imagine myself at the end of the day, looking back at where I have achieved. Thinking in results offers me the big picture + helps me feel connected to the BIG things. Also, I make my results visual. So, instead of saying I write an article about, "Non-toxic skincare", I tell myself that at the end of the day, I will have in my computer, a two pages document about "Non-toxic skincare." This section is one of the most important ones in the process + it answers the question, "What is the most important result for today?" IMPORTANCE Section This section makes me evaluate if what I have chosen to do that day is the most important thing for me at that particular time. As I mentioned before, there is nothing worse than spending energy on something that you don't like + it is not important for you. This section answers the question, "Why is this result important for me?" DELEGATION Section Many times we think "alone", without realizing that there are so many people that can help us. For example, if we are organizing a trip, you don't have to do everything on your own. If you do this exercise + ask yourself, "Who can team up with me to achieve the result?" , your mind will always find a way to take it easy on you and find "external contractors". STEPS Section The last section helps you break down into actionable steps, the result you need to achieve that day. Here is where I list, the 3 most important steps that will take me closer to achieving my result. It answers the question, "Which are the most important steps in achieving the desired result?" As you can imagine, this exercise is not that powerful if done on the computer. You simply need to sit there, with your pen or pencil in your hand + connect with your inner self. This is because creativity is inside your mind + you have to get it out there by involving all your sense + body, not the computer. Before you begin, (it may sound kooky crazy "woo woo"), but ask angels + your higher self to be present + assist. It's amazing to have something you can reference back to as proof when things manifest! Start off by manifesting small things...it's amazing how the universe always works in your favor.

  • TAYLOR MOMSEN: THE PRETTY RECKLESS + GOSSIP GIRL - August 22, 2014

Taylor Michel Momsen is an American singer, songwriter, musician, model + actress. Prior to her retirement from acting, she portrayed the character of Cindy Lou Who in the film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) + as Jenny Humphrey on The CW's teen drama series Gossip Girl (2007–2012). Momsen has been the frontwoman of the American rock band The Pretty Reckless since their inception in 2009. Hell remains a source of inspiration for all kinds of art. It’s impossible to even catalog how many books, movies, plays + records have been written on the subject. However, the world’s fascination with the big ‘ole inferno never dwindles or dissipates. The Pretty Reckless‘ second full-length album Going to Hell flirts with those themes, most notably on the raucous + roaring title track. Over a twisting + turning riff + bombastic rhythm, frontwoman Taylor Momsen  confidently announces, “I’m going to Hell.” “We had so many insane things happening in our lives, we wanted to sum everything up in one phrase,” she recalls. “ Going to Hell felt really appropriate.  I grew up Catholic and did the whole Catholic school thing, so it’s in my vernacular. We used religion as a metaphor, but the track relates to problems everyone faces.  I think this is the perfect time for us to be doing what we’re doing.” Even if the making of Going to Hell often felt like some kind of divine prank, one senses this is their moment. After two years on the road The Pretty Reckless -Momsen, Ben Phillips (guitar), Mark Damon (bass) + Jamie Perkins (drums) had risen through rock ‘n’ roll’s ranks to become a profound + often polarizing, presence.  The quartet sold over 350,000 albums + over 1 million digital tracks performing as headliners all around the globe + supporting acts such as Guns N’ Roses + Marilyn Manson. Ultimately Going To Hell is rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form.  The Pretty Reckless holds nothing back. “We did this album with the mindset of having no boundaries,” Momsen concludes. “We didn’t follow any formulas or trends. We said anything we wanted to say.  This is us.” Read more about The Pretty Reckless in my interview with the well spoken songstress, Taylor Momsen  below. Where does this interview find you today? What’s on the agenda today besides this interview? We’re in the middle of rehearsals for our Fall tour of North America and the UK. We’ll be out for three months and we’re adding a bunch of songs off of our new record ‘Going to Hell’ and maybe some new songs so we’re playing all day every day for the next couple weeks. Then we start the tour in Florida on September 5th. When did you start putting the band together? How did you guys all meet? I started looking to put a band together six or seven years ago. I met our producer Kato who introduced me to our guitarist Ben, through him I met Mark and Jamie. Ben and I started writing songs together and after the first time the four of us played together it just clicked. We’re like a family now. For your second studio album, Going To Hell, (Razor & Tie) you worked with rock producer Kato Khandwala (Blondie, Paramore, Papa Roach) How was that experience? Kato is also like a family member at this point. We have been working together since the beginning. Communication is key when trying to get your ideas recorded and Kato understands us musically and personally. It’s a great experience, we’re always having a good time. Okay, here is a fun one: If you had the opportunity to work with any act/artist from the past, present or future, who would it be and why? If you could spend the day with them, where would you go…and what would you do? I’ve had the opportunity to meet a few of my idols and most of the time it has the reverse effect so I like to keep my heroes exactly where I created them, in my head. What was the inspiration for your monster first single, “Heaven Knows” ? Did you come up with the treatment for the video as well or was that a collaboration with the director? ‘Heaven Knows’ started as a simple hymn where I would sing a line and a class of kids would sing it back to me. It was just going to be a short piece of music connecting two of the other songs. Then these characters came out and eventually a story formed making it a full song. I wrote the video treatment and co directed it with Jon J in Miami, it was a lot of work but we finally succeeded. Lyrically, you delve into what some might consider “dark” topics. As you once said: Sex. Drugs. Death. Religion. What is your approach to songwriting? How do you capture the inspiration when it comes? Inspiration is a gift and a curse because you have no control over it. If the idea is good enough it will do whatever it takes to come out. When it’s real inspiration it feels like the artist is just a conduit for this creative force called an idea. It’s making something out of nothing, it’s intimidating and cathartic at the same time. I don’t consider it dark, I consider it honest. All these things exist, I’m just talking about them. What’s your take on Rock Radio today? Do you have any favorite on-air radio moments you can share with us? I love rock radio. I know it has suffered in the last decade or two with the model of the modern music business, but eventually people will need it again and the labels and corporations won’t be able to hold it back. We just finished doing the radio festivals in America, that was a great experience to see hundreds of thousands of people rocking in the free world. What was the first song you fell in love with growing up and why? Strawberry Fields by the Beatles, it’s just magical sounding, as is all their work. They are the kings of what we do. Who are some of the new artists who inspire you? Who is in your current playlist? I don’t listen a lot to modern music. I’m a big fan of the 60’s renaissance period of music, Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd. The newest record I’ve become absolutely obsessed with is Soundgarden ‘King Animal’, they just don’t give a fuck about anything but the music so they end up making the most simple yet complex music out there right now, it’s stunning. The Pretty Reckless has toured with Marilyn Manson and Evanescence. What was that experience like touring with those guys? Can you share any memorable stories from the road? It’s always good to watch more established artists perform. You learn a lot about performing and communicating with the audience watching how other people have accomplished it. Road stories stay on the road, but Amy (Lee) just had a baby so congrats to her! What’s on tap next for The Pretty Reckless? We’re doing a North American and UK tour starting in September through November. Lots of work and travel. It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. • BRANDON BOYD of INCUBUS - February 13, 2014

INCUBUS  is an American rock band from Calabasas, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist Brandon Boyd , lead guitarist Mike Einziger + drummer Jose Pasillas while enrolled in Calabasas High School + later expanded to include bassist Ben Kenney + DJ Kilmore. Incubus has received commercial success, reaching multi-platinum  sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single “Drive” + their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades , debuted at No. 1 in 2006 + has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan + Canada. The band released the album, If Not Now, When? on July 12, 2011. Singer, Brandon Boyd + the rest of the band took some time out between albums. Boyd released an album + toured with his solo band Sons of the Sea + Mike Einziger continued producing + making music with artists such as Hans Zimmer, Avicii + many others during that time. Enziger played acoustic guitar on Avicii’s 2013 worldwide hit “Wake Me Up“. Alongside this, Einziger also recently co-wrote + played guitar on David Guetta‘s song “Lovers on the Sun“. Enziger also recently played at the 2016 Grammy Awards alongside Diplo, Skrillex + Justin Bieber for their Jack U music collaboration. Incubus released two EP’s in 2015: Trust Fall (Side A) and Trust Fall (Side B). The first single, “Absolution Calling“, was released February 5th, followed by the second single, “Trust Fall“, on March 10th. Incubus’ first show of 2016 will be at snowboarder and musician, Shaun White’s AIR + STYLE music festival on Sunday, February 21st. I had a chance to catch up with Brandon Boyd during some down time at home, after seeing him perform live at The Belasco in downtown Los Angeles, during the release of his self titled debut album, Sons of The Sea a collaboration with producer Brendan O'Brien . Enjoy our chat below! Hi Brandon! Where does this interview find you today? What’s on the agenda today besides our interview? Hey Nicole! I am at home after being on tour through Australia, Japan, Asia, SXSW and Mexico. I have a steaming cup of joe in front of me and a little old bulldog slowly scratching himself in the corner. Today, I will go for a surf then continue writing songs. Let’s take a walk down memory lane, how did you get your start in music? Who or what was the catalyst for you? My interest in music coincided with my interests in art and creativity as forms of expression. My parents held creative expression in very high regard and encouraged my brothers and I to draw our feelings, our aches, our pains, our wins and our losses. My Mom played the piano often and sang to us, as did her Dad (our Grandfather). He would play my brothers and I to sleep with quiet Spanish songs on his acoustic guitar. I feel like being surrounded by music and art greased the gears for me to express myself similarly. Incubus was the first band I ever started with Michael and Jose. As far as I know, it was their first band too. We’d been messing around a little here and there with other people's songs until Mike and I had an English class project wherein we had to compose an original poem or song. That’s when we started and named the band.   Incubus received commercial success and mainstream recognition since coming onto the music scene in 1995. Earlier this year, you guys debuted a new song called, “Trust Fall” and the new single, “Absolution Calling,” and will be releasing two EPs this year. What did you learn between albums and solo projects that you felt you wanted to infuse into the Trust Fall EPs? I’ve learned so much it would bore your readers to tears for me to elaborate too much here. I will say that creating something away from Incubus for the first time in my life was sort of an amazing experience for me though. It was terrifying and liberating all at once. I am actually really thrilled with the way that the Sons of the Sea album turned out and the small tour we did for it kind of helped reinvigorate me creatively. The album only reached a small audience but a passionate one and that occasion reminded me as to why I love making music again. Then, when the dust cleared from all of that, for the first time in what felt like so long, I could see what Incubus meant to me and how blessed I am to make music with these guys I love so much! We started jamming a few months back and everything started to click again like it had when we had no responsibilities and everyone truly wanted to be present. I am certain that everyone’s experiences aside from our band in that time period helped to reinvigorate them, but when all is said and done, I find that it doesn’t really matter how one finds their way back home. As long as one finds their way back home.   Can you share with me what your inspiration was for the single, “Absolution Calling”? There is a broad spectrum of potential experience in what could be termed ‘Spirituality’ or ‘Connectedness’. Prevailing gospel would tell you, no demand of you, that there is but one route or pathway to that connectedness and potential experience. “I’ve always been more an ‘off the beaten path’ kind of guy and in some of those spiritual footsloggings I’ve learned a few things about our latent potential and the curiously omnipresent keys to that potential that are readily available to any would be explorers.” So, to answer your question, I guess you could say that “Absolution Calling” is a song about a beautifully revealing experience. And an experience that I find is not some secret to be guarded over by a middleman or institution of some kind, but one that is accessible to any and everyone, should they so choose.   Who are your musical influences? There are two trucks backing up outside of my window at the moment, both with their reverse ‘beeps’…beeping. They are not quite in sync and not exactly in the same key but close enough that it’s creating a funny dissonance and strange rhythm. It’s stolen my attention so thoroughly that I am imagining other musical accompaniments to it. So, I guess you could say that right now, a trash truck and a moving truck are my biggest musical influences.   Do you remember the first album you bought for yourself? Yes! The Cure. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss me.   What was the first song you fell in love with and why? “It was either Neil Diamond’s ‘America’ or the Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky…’ Both songs I was exposed to in the snuggly safety of my car seat and both made me think of magical things as I stared out the window into the muddled melange that was the San Fernando Valley in the late 70’s and early 80’s.”  Who would your dream collaboration be with, living or dead? I wish to be painted by Egon Schiele. My smile in said painting would reflect my quiet knowing that I had time traveled to be there and that smile would be my contribution to the project, therefore making it a “collaboration”. Haha   Who is in your current playlist? Any artists, musicians or genres we might be surprised to find in there? Maybe not so surprised, no. Warpaint, Big Black Delta, Eno & Hyde, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, Jonathan Wilson, Anna Calvi, Bosnian Rainbows. I’m sort of all over the map with my musical intake.   What’s on tap next for you guys? What are you most excited about for this year? Touring the world!    To stay connected, visit Brandon Boyd + Incubus via their links below: Brandon Boyd Incubus This interview was in partnership with All Access Music Group, Malibu, CA: https://music.allaccess.com/qa-with-brandon-boyd-of-incubus

  • Jeremiah Fraites of THE LUMINEERS - March 6, 2016

Jeremiah Fraites of THE LUMINEERS Talks about the bands eagerly anticipated album: CLEOPATRA, Making of the “Ophelia” video + writing melodies for JENNIFER LAWRENCE t o sing in THE HUNGER GAMES In the spring of 2005, childhood friends Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) + Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion + piano) began to collaborate, writing together + playing gigs around New York. After battling the city’s cutthroat music scene + impossibly high cost of living, the two decided to expand their horizons. They packed everything they owned—nothing more than a couple suitcases of clothes + a trailer full of musical instruments + headed for Denver, Colorado. It was less a pilgrimage than act of stubborn hopefulness. The first thing they did in Denver was place a Craigslist ad for a cellist + the first person to respond was Neyla Pekarek , a classically trained Denver native. As a trio, they began playing at the Meadowlark , a gritty basement club where the city’s most talented songwriters gathered every Tuesday for an open mic + dollar PBRs. Neyla softened Wes + Jer’s rough edges while expanding her skills to mandolin + piano. And so The Lumineers sound took shape; an amalgam of heart-swelling stomp-and-clap acoustic rock, classic pop + front-porch folk. In 2011, their self-recorded EP led to a self-booked tour + before long The Lumineers started attracting devout fans, first across the Western US, then back in their old East Coast stomping grounds. Young, old + in-between, they’re drawn by songs like “ Ho Hey ” + “ Stubborn Love ,” Americana-inflected barnburners in the vein of the Avett Brothers + Mumford & Sons . The roots revival of the last few years has primed listeners for a new generation of rustic, heart-on-the-sleeve music — the kind that nods to tradition while setting off into uncharted territory. The Lumineers walk that line with a gift for timeless melodies + soul-stirring lyrics. Powered by passion, ripened by hard work, The Lumineers have found their sound when the world needs it most. Now, four years in the making…they’re back with an eagerly anticipated new album! All Access Music writer, NICOLE DEROSA had the pleasure of catching up with JEREMIAH FRAITES just before the release of the bands long awaited album, CLEOPATRA . Hey there Jeremiah! Where does our interview find you today and what’s on the agenda today besides our interview? Hey Nicole! Well, I’m at home right now and completely free this week. Besides our interview, I am also be picking out songs for a Lumineers Spotify playlist for songs that inspired the making of our second album, Cleopatra. My brother in law is also in town, visiting from Italy and we’re going to play soccer in about an hour which will be a lot of fun and something I love to do when I am home, which is very rare. Afterwards, I’m going over to my bandmate, Wes’ house for dinner later this evening. For those that have been living under a rock and not as familiar with The Lumineers and your music, who or what was the catalyst for you to want to live the life of a musical gypsy? Well, I think part of the thing that made me want to choose this lifestyle was two things…I guess, first was seeing my father go to work everyday, getting up at 6 in the morning everyday and getting home at five or six o’clock every night. He provided an amazing life for my brother, myself and my mother. That was amazing of him but I also saw that classic, traditional work ethic of going to a job everyday for 30 or 40 years and not necessarily enjoying the job but doing it because he needed to provide for his family. Secondly, I think I saw a lot of my peers after high school or college immediately finding jobs that paid well, but were not necessarily fulfilling them. It allowed for them to buy a house, a car, or a cool apartment in New York City or whatever superficial thing at the time but it didn’t make them happy. I said to myself, “I rather do something that makes me happy as opposed to something that makes me money”. I just think that it made sense to me…ya know, that idea of do what you love. You know that old cliche, “ If you do what you love for a living, you never work a day in your life…” Well, I do, do what I love for a living and I also work extremely hard, so I don’t know if that old adage is correct (laughs ) but I am very blessed and I feel very lucky to have had all that success with our debut album. "Before our debut album ever came out, Wes and I wrote music for about five or six years (now going on ten years…) before we found any success. “They” said it takes about ten years to be an overnight success and I suppose that was true with us." Your self titled debut album, gave us the memorable hit song, “Ho Hey” which would become the 10th song to reach a 60th week on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; eventually finishing its run at 62 weeks, as one of the highest runs in the chart’s history. What did you learn between your debut album and now that you felt you wanted to infuse into the album, Cleopatra? I guess we learned a lot…one thing is that there was this big anticipation for our second album, obviously and I think there was this big pressure to deliver an epic album. I think as The Lumineers, we certainly could have capitalized on the first albums success. In other words, we could have just put out another record, two years later that looked, sounded and felt exactly like the first one. I think a good metaphor is like winning the lottery and instead of buying more lottery tickets, we just took the money and invested it in the sense of finding all this success with the first album, we were very lucky to have with the success of “ Ho Hey ” but instead of trying to cheapen that experience or capitalize on it, shallowly. I think we thought...okay, let’s make the second album grow and evolve and let there be a palpable difference in the two albums, both sonically and well, everything. Both lyrically and how it just feels. I think it feels more grown up and more serious and again, evolved. These are all serious words using to describe our music but I really feel like that. I really feel that the second album is more mature. It’s pretty scary at times to think you will be remembered for just one song. I mean, “ Stubborn Love ” was an amazing single that went to number one at certain radio stations and we ended up selling over 3 million albums worldwide, but I think being known for that one song, I think gave us more “gasoline in the tank” and more inspiration to write an amazing second album and show people that we’re not just a one hit wonder or whatever you want to call it. We are capable of delivering an entire album of high level material. Jeremiah, you and Wes both composed the melody for the song “The Hanging Tree” which was featured in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and was performed by James Newton Howard and vocals by actress, Jennifer Lawrence. How did that all come about and how was that experience writing for a soundtrack? Well, it came about very organically. We had completed a song for The Hunger Games soundtrack called “ Gayle’s Song ” that is going to be on the second record. When we finished “Gayle’s Song” we were in the midst of being on the road, we were actually at Lollapalooza in Chicago and we had about six free hours that morning and we went into a studio and recorded “Gayle’s Song” which went on the first Hunger Games soundtrack. The director of The Hunger Games, Francis Lawrence reached out to me directly and it was just like I said, a very organic request…he said, “Hey do you and Wes want to write some music and a melody?” In the book, The Hunger Games there is this poem called, “ The Hanging Tree ” and obviously it’s just words on a page. So this was a really cool, working backwards kind of homework assignment. You know, typically….I'll find the melody first and Wes would write the lyrics and after the lyrics now write the melody. So, me and Wes worked on the melody and tried to imagine the Hunger Games character (Katniss) that Jennifer Lawrence portrays and being this center of attention in this war-like atmosphere and we tried to delve into this Appalachian-folky kinda vibe and sent it to them and they loved it! "I was just really blown away by what James Newton Howard did with that simple melody where it dissolves into all these complex chords running underneath it and it was just a really cool experience. And, to hear Jennifer Lawrence sing it…I don’t think she’s a trained singer, which was even cooler to hear because it’s very frail and vulnerable in a cool way, I really mean that in the best way possible." It was really neat to see this little melody on the big screen and in the movie, worked on by a world renown composer like James Newton Howard and sung by Jennifer Lawrence. It was a pretty crazy experience. Ya know, Wes and I write all this music for The Lumineers but also have all these other song ideas that we can’t use for The Lumineers, so doing something like that for a movie was a great exercise in continuing to be an artist and not something we would have done with The Lumineers. You guys continued your musical efforts on the small screen too, by releasing the song, “Visions of China” which was featured in the AMC television show, The Walking Dead. Are you all big fans of the show as well? To be honest, I’ve never seen an episode of The Walking Dead . I watched every episode of Breaking Bad and then I went back to an older show called, The X-Files and then we went on tour for three years (laughs) so, I haven’t had a lot of time to watch television. But, I love the song, “ Visions of China ” and I know that The Walking Dead is probably the biggest show in the world right now. “That’s pretty typical me though…I usually don’t get on the bandwagon until it’s five or ten years after the fact. I know one day, I’ll watch The Walking Dead .” What was the inspiration for your new single, “Ophelia”? Did you help come up with the treatment for the video as well? “ Ophelia ” was really cool because that was the first song that we had written and 100% completed in the demo-ing process. We finished touring the first album, going on three years now in December of 2014 and then we started writing in January of 2015. By February, “Ophelia” was done in the demo stage and that was really exciting because I felt like it helped me understand the second album. “I felt like “Ophelia” was this foundational cornerstone song that had to be completed before we wrote the rest of the album. And that was the first song on the album, so it’s kind of fitting that it’s the first song on the single or whatever you want to call it…” Lyrically, I heard Wes talk about it often…he says that the lyrics sort of just fell out of him as a stream of consciousness and then they began to have meaning later for him. Specifically to this idea of after touring for three years on the first record, you sometimes feel numb and disconnected to what you are doing and doing the same thing every night and you are exhausted from travel. “I think that after the first album and that level of international success would change anybody too, so the lyrics are about going through those internal changes within yourself, with your family and within the band. And also with how you perceive the world and how the world perceives you now too.” It’s pretty cool because the lyrics are kind of vague at times, but also specific if that makes any sense. I think that fed in lyrically into the treatment of the video…this idea of us performing, as these kind of stoic statues performing on a stage and this sort of ghost-like figure that rises from Wesley’s body that starts dancing in the street without a care in the world. It actually started to rain at the end of the shoot, which you can see in the video for “ Ophelia ”. That was not planned…that was no CGI rain! (laughs) That actually started to happen and it's one of my favorite scenes when it turns that corner and it's raining in Los Angeles. How rare is that? It was pretty great to capture it in that moment in the presentation of the song. Nowadays, everything is so instant…you press a button and it’s yours ala Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes etc. What was the first album you saved up your hard earned money as a kid and bought for yourself? I can remember buying an album by the band, Bush . I can’t remember the title of the album but it had the song, “ Machinehead ” and “ Glycerine ” which was a huge hit…it had a lot of cool songs on that album. I can remember going into a record store and my mother, ya know…she wouldn’t let me buy the records with the EXPLICIT CONTENT sticker. I was only allowed to buy the albums that were the edited versions. (laughs) I didn’t feel very cool in front of my friends with my “edited version” . I can specifically remember buying that Bush cd and just really falling in love. “I can also remember spending a lot of the time putting in the cassette and making 20, 30 or even 40 mix tapes of songs. And if the radio DJ talked over the last part of the song, I would get mad and I would have to wait for him and then re-record it the next time it came on the radio again. I would get really angry!” I would be really meticulous about collecting all this music and trying to do it “for free” which, little did I know…fifteen to twenty years later, that is how people were going to do it with YouTube and an infinite amount of songs at your fingertips “for free” . We live in a strange world now and it’s a strange time to be a musician. That said, I do think it’s also an exciting time to be a musician too. Change is not always bad. What was the first song you fell in love with (or made a lasting impact) on you and why? Well, let me think….I can remember… strangely enough, around the 4th or 5th grade, really falling in love with music for the first time and that was from the great composer, Beethoven . My brother got a Bach cd and we used to argue about who was better! (laughs) I just love Beethoven. I fell in love with…not the symphony of Beethoven, but just him on the piano. I guess they are called, sonatas. His songs are just so beautiful and I would listen to them every night before I fell asleep. So, I fell in love with the piano and Beethoven first. And then…I’ll never forget the first time I heard, “ Smells Like Teen Spirit ” by Nirvana come on the radio. I, of course recorded it off the radio on my little cassette player (laughs) and I just loved the guitar intro. I wanted to learn to play that song on the piano, but as a kid, I didn’t understand how to play that guitar “dun, dun, dun, dunn, dunn, dunn, dun, chkk ckkk ckkk” intro on a piano. I didn’t know how to play that palm muting guitar sound on the piano. I mean now, I know you can’t do that. (laughs) That’s not what a piano does. I remember I was in love with the song but I was like, “I can’t play this on the piano” and I was so confused. (laughs) “I just remember that time was kind of weird because I was listening to Beethoven but falling in love with Nirvana, Guns N Roses, Bush…and all these other hard rock bands at the same time, juxtaposed to the classical piano. I guess, I just love music of all kinds.” Who is in your current playlist? What artists or bands are in current rotation for you? I am at my computer right now and instead of showing you my playlist, I can explain to you my playlist. (laughs) Okay, so I have the song, “ The Truth ” by Dr. Dog , “ The Suburbs ” by Arcade Fire , “ Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime ” by Beck which is from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack. I also have “ A Day In The Life ” by The Beatles , “ The Ghosts of Beverly Drive ” by Death Cab For Cutie . I also have “ Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings ” from Father John Misty . And “ Hannah Hunt ” by Vampire Weekend . “I’m just really loving the latest Vampire Weekend album, Modern Vampires of The City. I’m really, really in love with the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie soundtrack too. It has that Beck song that I just mentioned and it has a ton of original songs by the composer, Jon Brion. It’s just incredible. So yeah, that’s just some of the stuff I’ve been listening to a lot lately.” What’s on tap next for The Lumineers? What are you most excited about for this year? Well, talking to you right now….it is Thursday, February 25th at 10:43am in Denver, Colorado and I cannot wait for our album to be released! I have the album here on my computer and I have it on my phone and I can’t send it to any of my friends. I have friends all over the world and they’ve been asking and texting me for the album, but I’ve really been respecting the album and not releasing it to anyone. I’m excited for our album, Cleopatra to come out on April 8th. It’s really frustrating that the album was done, basically in September…or maybe around early October and now almost six months later, the album will be out in April. So, I just can’t wait for that. I know it’s a great album. I just feel that strongly about it. I feel very proud, happy and content with it and I guess, I’m just excited for the fans to hear it! Our fans have been patiently waiting for four years and that’s a long time. There is a part of me that wishes we would have released an album earlier but there was no time. We toured and then we wrote this album. This is as early as this album could have come out when all is said and done. I’m really excited to go back on tour, see our fans and have them listen to our songs. It’s a totally different album than the first. We changed and I think we’re gonna push our listeners and test them a little bit….which my favorite artists have done with me whether it’s Radiohead , Beck , Pink Floyd or The Talking Heads . These are paradigm shifting artists that test their listeners to see what they were made of and I hope that in some capacity we do the same. • LEON BRIDGES - February 15, 2016

Todd Michael "Leon" Bridges, born July 13, 1989 is an American soul singer, songwriter + record producer from Fort Worth, Texas. He is best known for his 2015 song " Coming Home ", which received regular airplay + was also a Top 10 Most Viral Track on Spotify. Bridges' debut album, also titled Coming Home , was released on June 23, 2015, on Columbia Records + subsequently nominated for Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Bridges's style is primarily soul, but resembling 1960s rhythm + blues. The Wall Street Journal described him as a "throwback to '60s-soul a la Otis Redding and Sam Cooke." Bridges learned to play the guitar by playing simple chords to accompany his lyrics. While working at Del Frisco's Grille in Fort Worth, he played countless open-mics until he was signed by Columbia Records in December 2014. It was his song " Lisa Sawyer ", about his mother's conversion, that first defined his style. Bridges began writing + performing 1950s + '60s-style soul music that was described by Austin360 as "a transmission straight from the heart." Today I had a few interviews with Texas monthly and a short live phone interview with BBC. At the moment I’m sipping on some coffee. For those not as familiar with you and your music, how did you get your start in music? Who or what was the catalyst for you? One of my friends in college would bring her guitar to school every now and then. One day she asked me to watch it on her way to class and I asked her to show me some chords and she wrote a minor and e minor on a chart. Two years after that I bought a guitar and made the decision to make soul music. I understand you were recently in the studio with rock band, White Denim. How was that? Austin Jenkins and Josh Block are great guys! They were very patient and worked their tails off during the recording process. It’s a blessing that I was able to do my record with guys that have been in the game for a while. I needed someone to come along and help polish my vision. I couldn’t have been in a better position. On the track, “Coming Home,” you instantly transport the listener back to 1962 on this tune as you croon about returning to your beloved. What was the inspiration for that song? I wrote "Coming Home" because I wanted to express the idea of faithfulness that people can easily relate to. You are receiving a lot of comparisons as the new Sam Cooke. Who are your musical influences? I can’t hold a candle to Sam Cooke but that is very flattering. Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack and Van Morrison are my favorites. I’m also inspired by the musicians and songwriters in my community. Do you remember the first album you bought for yourself? Yes! “The Life” record by Ginuwine. What was the first song you fell in love with and why? “When A Woman’s Fed Up” by R. Kelly. I was at a community center “lock in” and a kid was playing that on the piano. I was totally drawn by that sound and I had never seen anyone play an instrument before that moment. Who would your dream collaboration be with, living or dead? Miguel and Raphael Saadiq! It would have been great to collaborate with Sam Cooke. On the other hand, I’d be satisfied to have been a fly on the wall. Who is in your current playlist? Any artists, musicians or genres we might be surprised to find in there? I’ve been heavy on a compilation of songs Sam Cooke produced under his label called “SAR Records Story”. I have Young Thug, Pretty Ricky and Sisqo on my other playlist. I might lose some fans now!.... Haha What’s on tap next for you, Leon? What are you most excited about in 2015? Touring our booties off! Nicole DeRosa for All Access Music, February 15, 2016 https://music.allaccess.com/qa-with-25-year-old-sam-cooke-worthy-crooner-leon-bridges/

  • Daniel Kessler of INTERPOL - March 18, 2015

Photo by: Jelle Wagenaar There were no guarantees that Interpol would make another record. Following the departure of bassist Carlos Dengler at the end of their 2010 self-titled LP + more than 200 shows in support of it, the band’s remaining members—guitarist & backing vocalist Daniel Kessler , singer/guitarist Paul Banks + drummer Sam Fogarino took a break for most of 2012. For the first time, they all lived in different cities, providing both geographic + mental distance from all things Interpol. Technically speaking, all things Interpol began at NYU in 1997, when Kessler recruited Dengler + Banks to form a band. "I didn’t care so much about talented musicians or having similar tastes in music as finding people with a certain sensibility," he remembers. In 2002, with Fogarino on drums, the band signed to Matador + released Turn On The Bright Lights , which Pitchfork named the year’s number one album. Over the next decade, they would go on to release a trio of records that found them cracking the Top 5 on the Billboard 200; earning rave reviews from Rolling Stone to TIME; headlining major festivals like Lollapalooza + touring with iconic bands including U2 + the Cure. They explored side + solo projects during their time apart, but ultimately found themselves drawn back together again, not by any expectations of returning to the studio, but rather by that same unshakable urge that brought them together in the first place, to let the music lead them where it may. “Paul and I got together for a short spell in August 2012, which was the first foray into seeing if we should do something,” remembers Kessler. “We had no plans whatsoever. I certainly didn’t have anything in my brain saying we had to do this. It was just us playing music to see if there was something there.” It quickly became apparent that there was indeed something there, something urgent + compelling, something revitalized + re-energized by their time apart. “Paul started singing in that first day or two, which is great, because it doesn’t always happen like that,” remembers Kessler, who composes much of the music. “I think he had the chorus melody for ‘My Desire’ right off the bat, so there was this good energy. It felt very exciting, like this was the beginning of something.” Those hot August days spent sweltering in an AC-less rehearsal space belonging to fellow NYC band Battles proved to be the birthing ground for El Pintor , Interpol’s fifth + most exhilarating studio album. It’s a driving, relentless record, taut + epic in equal measure. It’s also an album of firsts. “Carlos was a gigantic part of our band and he contributed greatly to our records,” Kessler explains. “So recording without Carlos was definitely a change. But we didn’t spend much time thinking about it, we just closed our circle and dealt with what was on the table.” That meant Banks stepping in to write + perform the bass parts for the first time. With Banks on bass, “the songs started growing in identity,” explains Kessler, who frequently found exciting + unexpected counterparts to his guitar riffs in Banks’ bass lines during those early writing sessions. “It was sort of like a new band in that sense.” Recorded at the legendary Electric Lady Studios + the brand new Atomic Sound in NYC, ‘El Pintor’ kicks off with “ All The Rage Back Home ,” a song that was actually born on the final day of the band’s last tour, as Kessler stood on a balcony overlooking Buenos Aires. It’s likely no coincidence, then, that the song signals a return to what Interpol does best, layering pulsing bass, bursts of guitar + driving drums beneath Banks’ instantly recognizable voice. “ My Desire ” fell into place almost instantly during rehearsals with a throbbing beat + insistent guitar riffs that shoot off like flares into the night, while “ Same Town, New Story ” took on an entirely new identity in the studio, as Banks crafted up an unexpected melodic context for Kessler’s laser-sharp guitar lines. Lyrically, there’s an air of darkness that weaves its way throughout the record. “This kind of shit don’t heal in a week,” Banks sings on “ My Blue Supreme ,” + titles like “ Twice As Hard ” + “ Everything Is Wrong ” hint at a struggle for acceptance during difficult times, to not be “beaten by the weight of it, ” as he laments on “ Ancient Ways .” In contrast with previous records, Interpol took a step back on El Pintor + “let the songs happen,” as Fogarino explains, embracing the patience it took to see where the music would lead them in its own due time. There may not have been any guarantees that they would record again, but the result is as accomplished + thrilling a collection as the band has ever released. ALL ACCESS MUSIC writer, NICOLE DEROSA had the pleasure of chatting with INTERPOL'S guitarist and backing vocalist, DANIEL KESSLER before the band jet off to South America. Enjoy their chat below... Hi Daniel! Where does this interview find you? What’s on the agenda today besides our interview? Hi Nicole! Today I’m just getting ready before Monday when we leave for South America – we’ll be travelling to Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and then in April and May, we come back around to tour the States including playing at Coachella. For those not as familiar with Interpol and your music, how did you get your start in music Daniel? How did you know you wanted to form the band with one another? I started playing guitar when I was about 14 years old or something like that, pretty loosely. It was right around the time I stopped skateboarding, I remember. (laughs) I never took too well to lessons so I just started writing my own songs and I really enjoyed it & it became really important to me. When I was in college I started realizing more that if I don’t try to play music & achieve forming a band I would be pretty miserable or not trying at least.  So, I just started approaching everyone in the band, individually and somehow we had a band for about 4 or 5 years making demos and not having many records labels too interested in us & then we finally had the chance to make our first record in 2001. We were definitely a part of the old way of doing things back then. We were in the minor leagues and it was tough. Sometimes you may think you want to quit before you might have had a chance to make a record and then you don’t and you decide to persevere and hopefully it makes you a better band. It made us a better band. You guys released your fifth studio album, El Pintor this past September. What did you guys learn between albums that you felt you wanted to infuse into El Pintor? Ya know, I never really think too much about what would be cool to do next. I never really sort of make a conscientious effort. We tour pretty hard after we release a record and with that, I find touring to be more about touring and less about writing, which is great. I love playing live and I love being able to play our catalogue now to people all over the world. It’s a real privilege. What is your writing process like? The good thing I discovered when I’m on the road is that even though I write more when I’m at home, I can also write when I’m on the road too. But the good thing about being on the road is that it gives you time to enjoy new experiences & grow as a person so when you finally get back from touring and take a little break, you have a new approach to writing music and writing songs. Something gets planted from that & it kinda grows from there. I don’t really know what I’m trying to do when I start writing songs. They just kinda come out. I never really knew I was trying to write the songs that I wanted to be on El Pintor, but I think I was kinda in the mood to do it and some of it kinda came out of left field. Some of the parts of the album are kind of conceptual in parts, which is great where you can challenge yourself. It’s a very organic process, for lack of a better word. Interpol is one of those bands that are unique in the sense that your songwriting methods include all of the band members, rather than relying on any given chief songwriter. How does that all come to fruition to create a cohesive song? The songs tend to begin with me and then I’ll take them to Sam and Paul and then we start dressing them up as an Interpol piece. It works out really nicely especially as Paul has now assumed bass and bass guitar duties. It works really well and no one gears one person to one direction and that’s what is important to us. I might bring something to the table but then Sam might start playing a beat but Paul might start being more influenced more by Sam’s beat then my guitar part and start going in that direction. We don’t know what it’s going to sound like at the end and that’s what makes it so exciting. What was the first album you purchased for yourself? I grew up in a small town in England and France with my family and it was the early ‘80s when my brothers were all punk rock kids and that was their religion, so I was always around incredible underground music. I think the first album that I bought for myself was probably U2’s Unforgettable Fire. I was maybe like 10 years old, I think? I was really young and for me to go buy an album for myself was a mission. The closest shopping mall was about 45 minutes away from where we lived. There was like three music channels in France and there was one music channel that would come on at like midnight and we would record the show overnight and watch it the next day and I remember hearing about that record on that show and getting excited because I knew I wanted it when I heard when it just had come out. Photo by: Jonathan Baker Do you remember the first song you fell in love with? I think the first song I fell in love with was “Come On Eileen”. I was really young…I was like five around that time and living in England. And I thought anytime that song was playing on the radio, it was for me! I would hold up an invisible microphone and sing it! Who would your dream collaboration be with? That’s too hard! I can’t….(laughs) that’s not fair, come on! I mean, Hendrix is one of my favorite guitarists. I would love to sit around with Hendrix for sure. I mean he is my favorite guitarists. He was a virtuoso guitarist and if not just a league of his own, he was on a planet of his own! He was so fresh. His singing delivery and his melodies and his guitar playing were just incredible. He was one of a kind. Who has been your favorite band to tour with? There are so many bands...that too hard! I can’t pick…that’s impossible. I think one of the best parts of when you do festivals is that you don’t really get to see a lot of your friends back home ironically because they are always touring. At festivals though, our lines luckily do cross. Who is in your current playlist? I’m excited about the new Mogwai record. I’ve know those guys forever, like since their first record. Also, I dig the new TV on The Radio record. What’s on tap next for you Daniel? What are you most excited about in 2015? Well, I’m definitely excited for the Interpol South America tour and going to Europe and then back to the States. For me personally, I have this other record that I just put out. It’s my debut album called, First Light with my side project, Big Noble with my collaborator, sound designer, Joseph Fraioli which came out on February 2nd. It’s probably the opposite end of the spectrum from Interpol in that it’s all instrumental and almost like music for film. That was fun to do. And also, making videos for each one of those songs was fun too and those are now online for you to check out. I think doing something with your friends fuels your fire for things and with Interpol too. I think it's healthy and fun. It’s a very different project and a little more left of center, if you will. I would love to do soundtracks, but so far it's really just music for music sake with my collaborator and friend and not really having a specific plan for it, but rather just working with someone else and seeing what happens when you work with someone for the fun of it. • MATISYAHU - November 25, 2015

Since first emerging on the international stage in 2005, MATISYAHU has established a reputation for following his muse — from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s (2006) to the trippy ministrations of Shake Off the Dust… Arise (2004) +  Youth  (2006) to the polished eclecticism of Light (2009) . He then incorporated heavier beats + beautiful Mediterranean instrumentations with  Spark Seeker (2012) + his personal + emotional evolution with another studio album called,  Akeda (2014) which is around the time of my interview with Matisyahu. As of 2024, The discography of Matisyahu consists of five studio albums, four live albums, one compilation album, two remix albums, three extended plays + twenty singles. As for the series of live releases, in 2010, the lyrical beat-boxing poet + rapper returned to the venerable Austin venue that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s II , demonstrating that all those travels had somehow only strengthened his connection to his musical bedrock. It was a whirlwind half-decade journey, one that earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture at large. Outer garments, of course, long defined Matisyahu in the eyes of many. “ I was the Hasidic reggae superstar, ” he says with a knowing laugh. “ We live in a world where people tend to think in extremes and categorize with ultimate statements, ” Matisyahu says.  “ While it’s true that at one point it would’ve been pretty accurate to describe me as Hasidic reggae, for most of my career my music has been a blend, a mixture.” LISTEN to my 2015 interview with MATISYAHU as we chat about life, music + the future HERE .   Enjoy some of MATISYAHU's live music videos below: Running Away Warrior So High So Low Lord Raise Me Up King Without a Crown To keep up to date with MATISYAHU , visit his socials below: Website Facebook   X   Instagram
