  • Finding A Biological DENTIST and Safely Replacing Your Mercury Fillings

Back in the day, many people got mercury fillings, including myself. I asked my parents why we did it and at the time, they didn't know about the dangers of mercury fillings. A few years ago I had 2 of the 4 mercury fillings I have replaced. Some biological dentists will accept some forms of insurance or you can even look into getting Care Credit . At the time, I was living in Florida and I had the very kind and very well educated Dr. Castellini at Medplex Dental, Holistic Dentistry safely remove my mercury fillings. I cannot recommend him enough if you live in the area or even book him during a trip. He's that good! As soon as I am comfortable post Covid, I will be going to get the rest of my mercury fillings replaced. Anyone looking to replace fillings should better educate themselves about the process. You first need to find a biological mercury "safe" dentist, very much different from a mercury free dentist. Then a chelating program should be done. Also, for women looking to get pregnant and breastfeed should not be tampering with mercury fillings as it can leach into the breast milk and to the fetus. To find a biological dentist in your area, visit the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology website here . This is a very sensitive subject as mercury moves in the body and destroys everything that it is exposed to in its path. (Source: @simpleorganix) The Dangers of Mercury Fillings: Did you know all silver fillings (also called amalgam fillings) contain about 50% mercury? Did you also know mercury is a highly toxic element? In fact, there is no known safe level of mercury exposure. Here in the United States, silver fillings are incredibly commonplace and have been used to restore the teeth of more than 100 million Americans. Yet time and time again, research shows that silver dental fillings expose you to the harmful effects of mercury. What is Mercury? Mercury is a naturally-occurring chemical element that exists in two main forms: methylmercury and elemental mercury. Methylmercury is mercury combined with carbon. Though this toxic form of mercury is invisible to the naked eye, it’s commonly found throughout the environment. For example, it’s in water, soil, plants, and animals– particularly fish. It’s also common in many household items such as fluorescent lights, batteries, and latex paint. Elemental mercury is when it has not yet reacted with another substance. Elemental mercury looks like a silvery metal liquid material. This form of mercury will evaporate into a toxic vapor when heated. Elemental mercury is common throughout our lives in items such as thermometers and barometers and also in – you guessed it – silver fillings. What Are Silver Fillings? Although the name implies that the filling is made out of silver, in reality it only has about 32% of this material. Like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, the majority of a silver filling (50%) is actually mercury. Your filling also has trace amounts of tin, copper, and zinc. When mixed together, these components create a hard and durable material called amalgam. This dental amalgam is filled into decaying teeth (often those with cavities) to help strengthen them and prevent their removal. Why is Mercury Used in Fillings? Mercury has been used in fillings since the 19th century, but has faced controversy since the beginning. Shortly after the invention of amalgam, numerous harmful effects were widely reported. Mercury poisoning became a top concern and many dentists vowed to stop using the material. However, the majority of dentists throughout the US continued to use amalgam fillings because they were much cheaper, faster, and easier to place than traditional gold materials. Flash forward to today and amalgam fillings have been placed in the mouths of over 100 million Americans. Meanwhile, countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have banned or restricted the use of amalgam fillings due to its proven toxic and poisonous effects. Despite numerous studies and evidence, the American Dental Association continues to highlight dental amalgam as a safe, affordable, and durable material. Even so, this viewpoint has not gone without criticism from other organizations, including the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). In one report, the organization stated: “The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology vehemently disputes recent allegations made by the American Dental Association (ADA) that there is no scientific evidence validating the harmful health effects of dental mercury fillings. The ADA continues to support its self-serving view by denying that mercury fillings are dangerous. Clearly, public health is not an ADA priority.” How Mercury Fillings Poison Your Body If you have a silver filling, every time you chew a small amount of mercury from your filling (about 2-20 micrograms a day) is released into your body. Chewing gum is especially problematic as it releases an even greater amount of mercury into your system. An increase in temperature in your mouth, for instance when you drink hot coffee or tea, will also encourages the release of mercury vapors in your mouth. The effects of mercury-laden fillings are scary. These fillings are one of the top contributing causes to mercury poisoning. This can cause a wide range of problems, including tremors, insomnia, headaches, nerve damage, kidney problems, and respiratory failure. In one recent study by the University of Washington, researchers found that the low-level release of mercury toxins into the body from a dental tooth filling can lead to long-term brain damage. It’s important to note that pregnant women and those who plan to get pregnant are especially at risk. This is due to mercury exposure being proven to have a devastating impact on the health of unborn fetuses and children. What to Do if You Have a Silver Filling. Mercury is poisonous to your body and it definitely should not be in your mouth. The longer you have silver fillings in your mouth, the more mercury you likely have in your body and the more it will affect your health. Although it will be difficult to remove the mercury already in your system, you can prevent it from continuing to build. Your best option is to remove your amalgam fillings as soon as you can. Removing silver fillings and replacing them with a safe, non-toxic material is a common dental procedure. Always make sure you have this painless procedure completed by an experienced holistic dentist who understands how to safely and effectively remove amalgam fillings. • Where I Was on September 11, 2001

During my college years, I worked as a receptionist at Morgan Stanley in New Jersey. Naturally, my job mainly consisted of answering & transferring calls. I had a big television across my desk where the news would flood in all day long. On September 11, 2001 at 8:14 am, about 14 minutes after sitting at my desk, the world was never the same. I looked up at the t.v. as they showed a plane crashing into the buildings - was it a horrific accident? Did something go wrong with the plane & it accidentally crashed into the building? This must be from a plane malfunction....My co-workers starting filtering around the lobby area where the t.v. was in front of my desk. My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest. I texted my brother, Anthony immediately as he worked in New York at the time. He was not in the city & just happened to be sick that day. I ran to the bathroom & for a few minutes straight cried in relief....eventually returning to my desk. Because Morgan Stanley had an office in one of the World Trade Center buildings, phones starting ringing and ringing and ringing - I picked up my phone and I can still hear the voices of husbands & wifes, mothers & fathers, daughters & sons asking me to connect them to their loved ones in the building. When I answered the first call, I think I must have disassociated out of shock. I spoke almost robotic-like saying, "Yes, of course let me see what I can do to connect you...Don't worry, your husband, wife, mother, father, daughter or son is probably trying to leave the building to safety. Don't worry. It's going to be okay." I tried to connect them to their loved ones. I could not. The phones were down everywhere. The land lines inside the World Trade Center, cell phones - everywhere was a busy signal. You could not connect with anyone throughout the city. ....I have a lot of PTSD from that horrific day. The voices of loved ones trying to connect to their family one last time during a terrorist attack. It makes me think of everywhere else this is happening all over the world today in 2022. My whole body was shaking with each call that came in....I finally broke down in tears from holding in all my emotions and the horrifying reality of what was actually happening. Everything started to become a blur & sound became muffled. I just remember my boss telling me that we were going to close the office early at some point but that I should just go home. I can't quite explain the extreme sadness I felt that day and still feel from it all - it's a different kind of sadness that I just can't quite put my finger on...It's like you are close but not close enough to help. You hear the voices asking you for help and you cannot. I know it was out of my hands with the phones being down, but I felt like I had the hearts of these families in my hands. I felt like I was there with them trying to reach a loved one during a nightmare that you cannot wake up from. Years later, I moved to Malibu, California and every year Pepperdine University would put out flags all across the entire front lawn to remember & honor those that were murdered that day. The flags go on for what seems like forever....I can still picture what it looks like right now. I can picture the families visiting & sitting on the lawn paying their respects & remembering loved ones. I remember passing by on my drive to work along Pacific Coast Highway, trying to focus on the road and then pulling my car over to break down in tears before heading into work that morning and continue my day as "normal" as possible. I will forever hold all the beautiful souls that became angels that day in my heart forever. To the families & friends who are missing a loved one, I'm holding you in my heart forever as well. This week, I'll be sharing a post about grief that I'm in the middle of writing, so until then, hug your loved ones, say what you need to say, make time for one another, don't hold grudges and remember that everyday is a gift. Peace & Love, Nicole

Artificial colors have one job...to distract people from the absence of real food. Real food is vibrant & colorful. Processed food with filler & chemicals...not so much. So, these processed food brands have to add artificial color to give the illusion that what you are eating looks presentable. Processed foods have ZERO nutritional value. Artificial dyes are made from petroleum & have been FDA approved for awhile now. The United States originally had over 50 different artificial dyes but over the years, they have been recognized as UNSAFE & TAKEN OFF THE MARKET. Only 7 remain. Over the last 50 years, synthetic food dye used in foods have increased by 500%. The consumption of food dyes & their ability to bind to body proteins can have a SEVERE EFFECT ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM & AUTOIMMUNITIES. Source: NCBI: 25599186 The 3 most widely used artificial colors: Red 40, Yellow 5 & Yellow 6 are CONTAMINATED WITH KNOWN CARCINOGENS. Source: cspinet.org/dyes-problem-table.pdf Brands To AVOID The images above (courtesy of Food Babe) show the ingredients of the same product but what each country allows. Basically, if you look under the U.S. version of the ingredients, it tells you the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and we the people don't care what kind of toxic ingredients are in our food. On the flip side, the United Kingdom and Japan are much more strict when it comes to toxic ingredients in their food. Therefore, brands like M&M's, KitKat, Hershey's etc. must make alternate versions of their product so that they can be sold in those particular countries. America must do better. We all must demand better. Clean food and ingredients should be the standard. Artificial dyes are in many items from hand soap to protein powder. I will be showing you that there are in fact cleaner alternatives in my upcoming posts but for now, let's focus on Halloween candy & treats in particular..... • My Abnormal MRI + Breast Needle Biopsy

I had some unexpected news last month as I was checking off all my health appointments for the new year, starting with an annual mammogram. Like many women, I have dense breast tissue coupled with the fact that my Mama Joy had carcinoma in situ + a lumpectomy performed on both of her breasts (20 years apart) My Aunt also recently had the same. Since there is a family history, my doctor, the lovely Dr. Harriet wanted me to have a follow up Breast MRI after my Mammogram + an Ultrasound. There was nothing suspicious on either, but just to be on the safe side + because of the family history, I was qualified to have an MRI. I had a Breast MRI performed on January 20th which revealed an abnormality that required a biopsy. I read my MRI report.... The word ABNORMALITY became 3D, hovering off the paper, getting larger + larger as it moved closer toward my eyeline. The only way that you can be sure that the abnormality is benign (not cancer) is to sample or surgically remove the area of concern + have it reviewed for pathological analysis. My incredible breast surgeon, Dr. Harriet called me and presented me with the option to either do another MRI in six months or go ahead + have a needle biopsy performed. I immediately said, "let's do the needle biopsy." I surprised myself with how quickly I answered Dr. Harriet, but honestly it wasn't even a struggle...Why would anyone wait? Let's get this sh*t done! After I agreed, I hung up the phone + then tried to "panic process" what just happened. My Mama Joy was able to put me at ease. She had a needle biopsy twice + she told me that I won't feel anything since they numb the breast. I knew, if she could do it, then I certainly could do it too. What also helped me tremendously was that I refrained from googling + looking anything up online about the procedure which is SO unlike me. I usually research the sh*t out of anything + everything thanks to my clinical OCD but not this time! This past Monday, February 6th, I had a MRI Breast Needle Biopsy on my right breast. Since I had not slept a wink...I already had a lovely pounding migraine the morning of the procedure. My head hurt so much, that the migraine more or less kept my mind numb of any intrusive thoughts. I was on autopilot at that point putting one foot in front of the other. We got to the hospital, checked in...insurance, paperwork, yadda yadda...all the things...I finally found myself face down on the padded scanning table where my lovely nurses, Jenny + Josephine helped me get in the proper position so that my breast fit into a hollow depression in the table. In a few moments a very large needle would be inserted into my breast. Your breast is mildly compressed. This test also requires intravenous contrast administration (contrast material given through your vein). Nurse Jenny asked me what music I would like played during the procedure. Instead of tropical or relaxing zen music, I said, "How about some dance or pop music?!" The thoughts that went through my mind at this point consisted of.... "Why does this MRI machine have to beep so f*cking loud?! It's drowning out Britney Spears who is actually calming me down right now!!!" "Who designed this machine?" "Isn't there an engineer that can make these machines not be so triggering with all these beeping + alarm sounds?!?" "You got this, Nicole! Just stay still. It will be over soon. Shake it off..." And just like that, Taylor Swift began singing "Shake It Off" faintly into my ear. As I sang along, I felt more at ease...apologies to everyone in radiology for my vocal rendition. Having the radiologist play music is the only saving grace during an MRI, but the machines are so loud making these jarring alarm sounds that would make my body jump at the sound of them going off and on the whole time. Now add the pressure of being told, "DO NOT MOVE, NICOLE...NOT EVEN A MILLIMETER or we will unfortunately have to start all over again." The MRI machine provides images that help determine the exact location for the biopsy. Following the administration of local anesthesia, a small incision less than 1/4-inch long (about 5 millimeters) is made to allow the core needle to be inserted. Several samples of tissue are taken + sent to a lab for analysis. Sampling takes a few minutes. I tried to relax + honestly at this point, I was so exhausted from not sleeping that I tried to take somewhat of a nap. Once Dr. Harriet numbed my breast, I hardly felt anything after that. I actually said out loud, "Wait. What? It's done?! You did it?! I was so scared this was going to be so painful but my migraine hurt more than the needle!!" The overall exam table time was about 30-45 minutes. Before I knew it, I was off the table getting dressed + being wheeled upstairs for a post biopsy Mammogram. At the time of the breast biopsy, a small titanium marker or clip was placed in my breast at the biopsy site. This is done so that if a biopsy shows cancer cells or precancerous cells, your doctor or surgeon can locate the biopsied area + remove more of the surrounding breast tissue surgically (known as the surgical or excisional biopsy). If the core needle biopsy shows no concerning findings, this marker/clip allows the radiologist to closely monitor the area on future imaging studies. The days in between were the worst, allowing my mind to wander with all kinds of intrusive thoughts. Mama Joy and I continued binge watching five seasons of Alias on Disney+ which definitely helped take my mind off things. Luckily receiving the results only took a day and a half. Dr. Harriet called and in her sweet, warm + comforting voice said something to the effect of, "I have some glorious, spectacular, amazing, incredible news for you, Nicole! It is not cancer. The final pathology (results) show that you had a fibroadenoma." What is a FIBROADENOMA? A fibroadenoma (fy-broe-ad-uh-NO-muh) is a solid breast lump. This breast lump is not cancer. A fibroadenoma happens most often between ages 15 and 35. But it can be found at any age in anyone who menstruates. A fibroadenoma often causes no pain. Reproductive hormones may cause fibroadenomas. A fibroadenoma feels like a firm, smooth, or rubbery lump in the breast with a well-defined shape. It's painless and moves easily when touched. However, I never even felt anything there. It was the Breast MRI that picked it up. Although healthy breast tissue often feels lumpy, a new lump or change in the breasts should be looked at by a doctor. Treatment may include monitoring for changes in the size or feel, a biopsy to evaluate it or surgery to remove it. If you are curious to see what a MRI-guided breast needle biopsy entails, you can watch the video below: A few days LATER... It's been about four days now since the needle biopsy and I have to say, the whole thing was not bad at all. This is coming from your girl (me) who has never had any prior surgeries (...knock on wood) or procedure of this nature. I kept an ice pack on the site for 30 minutes on/off the first couple days and tomorrow I'll remove the bandage + shower. I return in May for a 4 month follow up Mammogram + Ultrasound so Dr. Harriet can closely monitor the area. This is where that small titanium marker or clip that was placed in my breast at the biopsy site comes in handy. I wanted to share my experience, because I don't want anyone else to freak out too much when they get a letter that says "abnormal" after a Mammogram, MRI or Ultrasound etc. Be consistent and don't put off your routine appointments. The sooner things are found, the better AND most likely more treatable. I just watched this video by a girl named, Ashley Nikasia. Although, my experience was a bit different in that my MRI scan found the fibroadenoma. I never felt a lump or had any pain like Ashley, so I want to share her story below as well. Thank you Ashley for sharing your experience! xo Please don't delay your health checkups. Be proactive! To me, it's even more stressful to put it off than just get it done and check it off your list. I don't like to give my mind unnecessary time to wander around to a negative place + you shouldn't either. For more resources + information about BREAST HEALTH, check out my other post here.

  • My Favorite Glass, Stoneware + Ceramic TABLEWARE SETS

Let me start by saying that with a few exceptions, glass is the safest material for items that come in contact with food. Unlike ceramics & clay, glass normally does not leach lead, cadmium & other heavy metals. Unlike plastic, it does not leach hormone-disrupting chemicals. So, I personally only use glass food storage, glass cookware & glass tableware in my kitchen. Vitrelle® glass is a type of tempered glass, which has three layers of glass. This construction makes glass very durable, chip & break-resistant. On the other hand, watch out for Corelle brand ceramic mugs. The material for mugs is not glass – it’s stoneware. On top of that, China is the manufacturing location for the Corelle mugs. If you do purchase a Corelle set, I suggest purchasing without the mugs. Instead, see the drinkware I suggest below. Plain glass with no color or paintings on it is one of the safest options for glass dinnerware and glass cookware. Below is a dinnerware set by Corelle (a reputable brand) made with vitrelle glass. BALL Lead Free Glass Drinkware We have been using Ball mason jars both as drinking glasses & as storage containers for years now. Tamara Rubin of Lead Safe America tested mason jars & found that the Ball brand mason jars were consistently the least likely to contain lead. Avoid colored ones as they tested positive for lead. We use these Ball Pint-sized Mason Jars below as drinking glasses & glass food storage. I store homemade tomato sauce & soup in these Ball jars. • How To Create HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

Genuine connections are so special + staying plugged into them means being intentional with your time. It's hard to come by considerate , consistent + reliable people so if you have them in your life, share your gratitude + appreciation often. It's okay to disconnect from the people, places + things that are forced, inconsistent + one sided. Boundaries feel so hard when you're used to putting everyone else before yourself + they were always necessary. Without them, you'll feel anxious, depressed, alone, exhausted + taken advantage of. The more self aware you become + conscious of how valuable the energy inside of you is, the more thought you will give to where + who you pour it out to in life. It is healthy to check in + always work on ourselves + remind yourself that your energy is valuable + that you will only pour into genuine connections. The rest is not worth your time, worry or concern. Your boundary need not be an angry electric fence that shocks those who touch it...It can be a consistent light around you that announces: "I will be treated sacredly." - Jaiya John This is a topic that I plan on expanding upon more + also including in upcoming podcast episodes, where myself + others will talk more about creating healthy boundaries with yourself, relationships, friendships, family, partners, co-workers etc. I've been working on my mental health in virtual therapy + I have made a lot of progress creating boundaries with + for myself which, to give you an idea....look like this: Having a bedtime Deciding what my maximum amount of time I dedicate to work each week looks like. Setting limits on my amount of screen time (tv, social media, phone) Having an amount of time per week where I do a fun workout or move my body by stretching, walking or dancing. Meditate daily (which could be using the Calm app or following a meditation on YouTube or simply sitting outside with a cup of my favorite PIQUE matcha, golden milk or tea listening to the birds chirp +meditate as I look up at the sky) Going to doctors appointments (this has been a big deal for me - as I'm sure it has been for others, but I was having severe anxiety + panic attacks deciding if I was going to follow up on check ups, an MRI (for a hepatic hemangioma) or getting blood drawn during a pandemic. I always ask the doctors office to call me in from my car when a patient room is ready, so I don't have a panic attack in the waiting room.) Don't apologize for your priorities. If it's important to you, be proud of it and don't apologize for it. There may be situations where you may feel the urge to dampen the importance of your priorities because others don't understand or value what you prioritize. Don't worry, it's natural. In fact, as human beings, there is sometimes a pull that encourages us to make others feel comfortable even at our own expense. Whenever you feel the urge to apologize for your priorities, remember that YOU matter + YOU are of value. Protect your mental health + well being. Things You DON'T Need To APOLOGIZE For Existing Saying, "no" Setting boundaries that protect your peace of mind Not responding to things not worth your energy Prioritizing your selfcare Disappointing people when you do prioritize your selfcare Outgrowing people, places, things Outgrowing parts of yourself Ending a toxic friendship or relationship Following your dream Telling the truth Your priorities Delay in your response Asking for clarification Needing help Crying / Showing emotion Asking for attention Your imperfections Now, finish this sentence on your own: "I'm done apologizing for _____________________________________." To be clear, unless you've done something intentionally wrong or intentionally hurt someone, stop apologizing. I'd like to thank YOU. Yes, you the one reading this. I'd like to say a big thank you for your continued engagement. I am so thankful for you being here. Writing (or typing, as it were) has been so therapeutic for me + it makes me so happy to hear from you. Let me know if the above resonates with you in the comments section below. I love hearing from you!

  • OWL VENICE - Pre Reset Guide - Follow Along with Mama Joy and I on our Health Journey!

Mama Joy + I have the OWL Reset on our horizon. I will be showing you how we go about it + you can follow our journey on my Instagram: HERE! I will be talking more about the Reset + why we wanted to do it in my next blog post + on my Instagram. For now, learn + follow along on how to prep your mind + body prior to the reset. Below are all the helpful tips all provided by Health Coach, Lillian Jacobs on what to do before you begin the OWL Reset. "Diet, lifestyle and environmental factors leading up to the reset will all impact how you feel, so don’t fret if each time you cleanse it feels a little different than it did the time before. From my personal experience, I’ve noticed that when I adequately prepare for a cleanse I feel better all around from day one. I’ve also noticed that properly exiting cleanses allows for the feel-good-cleanse-glow to last a lot longer. Ready to begin? Here’s my top pre Reset tips below." PRE-Reset Ween Off The CAFFEINE "Don’t panic, it’s just temporary. I also love my cup of coffee in the morning but it’s important for your adrenals to give coffee a rest a few times a year. The OWL Reset is a caffeine-lovers breeze because we incorporate matcha into your morning mylkshake. You’ll still get a light dose of caffeine that will support you throughout your day but is gentle enough to allow your adrenals to rest. If coffee is a part of your daily routine, start weaning off of it a week or two before you’re ready to start the reset. Trust me, this way is much more pleasant than the cold turkey approach (and yes, I’ve tried both)" 1. Leading up to the reset start to cut down on your coffee consumption by half a cup every few days. For example, if you drink 3 cups of coffee on the reg, try for 2.5 cups for the next few days, then 2 cups… you get the jist? If you feel yourself crashing in the afternoon, reach for a cup of PIQUE green tea, you’ll get a gentle boost of caffeine plus all the extra antioxidants. 2. Once you’re down to half a cup of coffee/day, give yourself a pat on the back - that’s not an easy thing to do! Then move on to PIQUE green tea or their ceremonial grade matcha. I recommend making sure you’re comfortable on this lightly caffeinated beverage for a day or two before starting the reset. Say Sayonara To SUGAR "When you eat sugar your brain releases dopamine, a neurotoxin connected to feelings of pleasure and happiness. This is why sugar can be so addictive, when we feel those happy feelings our body starts asking for more, more, more! I’ve found that I don’t realize how much sugar I actually consume daily (and how addicted to it I am!) until I have to cut it out. If you attempt to cut out sugar cold turkey during the reset you may be knocked down with symptoms of sugar-withdrawal. Take my word for it, it’s not a pleasant feeling. Here’s how to go about easing the symptoms of withdrawal in order to make your reset experience more enjoyable overall" 1. A week or so before you start your cleanse you’ll want to become aware of how much sugar you’re actually consuming. The key to this is to read every label. You’d be surprised by all of the foods sugar sneaks into, even in so-called “health foods”. 2. Spend a few days swapping processed sugar with more nutrient dense sugar substitutes such as maple syrup, honey or coconut palm sugar. 3. Once you’ve managed to get the refined sugar completely out of your diet start to cut back on the sugar substitutions as well. Do this incrementally, similar to wean-ing coffee above. You deserve another pat on the back here too! If you find yourself crashing + craving that sugar boost - try reaching for a piece of fruit instead. Once you’ve gotten sugar out of your system fresh fruit will start to taste much so much sweeter! Simplify, Simplify...You Guessed It...SIMPLIFY! "It’s nice to give the gut a break as you ease into a liquid based cleanse. Focus on easy to digest meals for about 3 days before your cleanse. One of the easiest ways to do this is to cut out condiments. The sauces + spreads that make our food so very tasty often have multitudes of ingredients, sweeteners, thickeners + preservatives. None of that is easy on the gut. Swap it out for fresh herbs + spices, which have healing properties as well. It’s a double win! Here’s a few of my favorite pre-cleanse food ideas" Simple soups: take your favorite veggie or two (I personally love carrots and/or broccoli for this), boil them in a saucepan with the OWL Vegan Mineral Broth (or whatever your favorite flavor is) + let simmer until the veggies are soft. Add a splash of full fat coconut milk (the canned kind) + blend all together until the soup is a creamy consistency. I also love OWL's Savory Summer Gazpacho - it’s one of the best ways to incorporate the Broth Elixirs in the warmer summer months. You get all the healing properties of their Broth Elixirs plus cucumber to keep you hydrated, cilantro to help detox the body + avocado to keep you feeling full! • PURITY COFFEE - A Health Conscious Coffee Company. First Time Customers Get 20% OFF!

How is PURITY COFFEE different from all other coffee brands? They produce coffee with a single goal in mind…maximizing the health benefits. In this short video, founders Andrew Salisbury + Jon Butcher discuss Purity’s relentless focus on health throughout every step of the production chain. From the beans they select to how the coffee is packaged, no corners are ever cut at the expense of health benefits. This strict adherence to their core standards is what sets Purity apart from any other coffee company in the world. My mom, Mama Joy is an avid coffee drinker. Since it is something she likes and enjoys often (every morning), I wanted to be sure that she is putting THE cleanest + purest coffee in her body. We are also both avid listeners of Integrative Oncology Naturopathic Doctor, Christian Gonzalez's podcast, Heal Thy Self where he explains why he drinks Purity Coffee, here . After listening to Dr. G + doing my own research, there is no other coffee that we will drink. Purity Coffee’s Signature 3-Step Process While there are many coffees produced today which claim to be good for you, the signature process Purity Coffee have developed ensures you’re getting the healthiest coffee available…period. The reason for this is very simple: Purity Coffee optimize for health benefits during every single step of the production process. Here’s what Purity Coffee is doing to make their coffee so healthy: STEP 1: Health Profile They select only the highest-grade organic green coffee beans then laboratory test them to make sure they meet their standard. STEP 2: Roasting Protocol They customize their roasts for each lot of green coffee to make certain it contains minimum toxins + maximum health benefits. STEP 3: Freshness They pack their coffee to ensure that Purity retains its health profile + arrives to your door as fresh as the day it was roasted. Step 1: The Purity Health Profile Each season Purity Coffee lab test high-altitude, organically grown Arabica beans from farms around the world to determine which coffees meet or exceed Purity’s standards. From Indonesia to Costa Rica, from Ethiopia to Brazil, their mission is to find the highest quality coffee that fit the 5 criteria of their Purity health profile. The 5 Criteria of Purity Coffee's Health Profile Purity estimate less than 1% of coffees worldwide fit all 5 of these… Purity is always organic. Organic coffees have been produced by following approved methods of agriculture + handling. These methods integrate cultural, biological + mechanical practices, including cycling of resources, promoting ecological balance + conserving biodiversity. Purity standards require “Near Zero Defects.” The highest standard of coffee with the least number of defects is classified as “specialty grade” + that is the Purity starting point. Green coffee defects are substandard coffee beans that can occur for a multitude of reasons: Adverse climate conditions, poor agricultural, harvesting + processing practices + problematic transportation or storage of the coffee. Some of these defects are difficult to avoid, but others can be avoided. Regardless, to get defect-free coffee, most coffee must be sorted, so that whatever defects remain are removed. For most coffee companies, taste is the main reason for removing certain defects. For Purity, health is the main reason, because some bean defects can lead to microorganisms, toxins like Ochratoxin A, or an uneven roast profile, which can create unwanted carcinogenic (cancer causing) PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Purity contains no mold. Ever. Mold + mycotoxins are a serious health concern, with accepted levels for consumption differing from country to country. Mycotoxins form from some molds. If mycotoxins are present, only a small amount can be eliminated at high roast temperatures. Unfortunately, these high temperatures may increase the formation of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons + eliminate healthy chlorogenic acids (polyphenols) in coffee. Therefore, Purity Coffee tests their coffee as it passes through each step of the supply chain, ensuring it is free from contamination. Purity sources sustainable coffee. Purity Coffee not only cares about the health of their coffee, they care about the health of the people who produce it + the environment in which it is grown. Sustainable agriculture is “an integrated system of plant + animal production practices that will last over the long term”. These integrated practices include: Satisfying human food needs Enhancing environmental quality + the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends Making the most efficient use of non-renewable resources + on-farm resources to integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles + controls Sustaining the economic viability of farm operations Enhancing the quality of life for farmers + society as a whole Purity has exceptional taste. Purity Coffee's industry-recognized cuppers taste a selection of coffees that fit their Purity health profile + select the best tasting ones. While health benefits are always their main concern, Purity also tastes great. Less than 1% of coffees worldwide fit all 5 of these criteria + Purity Coffee searches diligently for coffees that do. All Purity Coffee is specialty grade coffee, but not all specialty grade coffee is Purity Coffee. Fresh is Best There are only a few food + beverage products that improve with age + coffee isn’t one of them. Once the green beans are roasted, the coffee is exposed to the air. If the coffee is dark roasted, the rich oils shining on the surface of the beans start to oxidize, degrade + eventually turn rancid. This also happens internally, even in lighter roasted beans. Purity Coffee believes coffee retains optimal health benefits as whole beans for up to 20 days after roasting. This is the best time to experience the amazing flavors, fresh bloom, the energy that you will notice in your body + the clarity you’ll notice in your mind. It’s not just the caffeine you’re feeling… Rather, it’s the sustained energy derived from consuming one of the richest sources of antioxidant compounds on earth. These marvelous qualities start to fade after 20-30 days. When coffee goes bad, the oils become rancid, the organic materials stale + the taste has distinct bitterness, sourness + dull wood flavor. Coffee may languish on supermarket shelves + in warehouses for months, losing more flavor + growing stale over time. As a result, both the coffee’s fresh, bright flavor + some of the health benefits are already on a downward spiral by the time a consumer puts it in the shopping cart. This is why so many of the coffees sold in supermarkets are labeled without reference to their “roasted on” dates, making it impossible for you to determine how fresh they are. As a Purity Coffee Subscriber, you receive your coffee every month + it arrives to you as soon as the delivery vehicle can get it there. That means the coffee is fresh + tastes great, but it’s also better for you than most coffee that has been roasted months before you get the chance to buy it. Once you have tried freshly roasted Purity Coffee, you will notice the difference, not only in how it tastes, but how it makes you feel. Most of Purity Coffee's customers report feeling a sustained, clean energy, without the jitters and upset stomach that comes from ingesting a stale coffee. • COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is a place that I really want to visit someday. I want to preface this post with a note that I have collaborated with friends who have visited or live in Costa Rica + did my own extensive research + spoke to many of the businesses mentioned to help write this post. Thank you (you know who you are) for your time, suggestions + feedback! Costa Rica is a breathtaking natural wonder. In addition to world-class beaches, it has some of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on earth. With 28 diverse protected areas (25% of the country), you can national park hop for weeks here + still not see them all. There is truly something here for everyone! If slumbering sloths, majestic scarlet macaws, tree frogs as pretty as they are poisonous + thousands of nesting sea turtles are your thing, then you're in luck! If you're into volcanoes, well....Costa Rica has some of the world's most active ones in the world! When To VISIT September - The dry season + also the best time for clear Caribbean waters to snorkel in + visit volcanoes + cloud forests. January - For the best cultural events, visit during the first 2 weeks of January for Palmares (basically Carnival meets rodeo meets music festival) or Easter week. As a Catholic country, many of Costa Rica's biggest holidays correspond with the Church's. November - April (Summer) - Considered their dry season. It can be a bit rainy on occasion, but downpours don't last all day. May - November (Winter) - Considered their wet/green season. However, things are slightly less predictable on the Caribbean coast which gets more rain. On the flipside, it does give you an opportunity to take advantage of the lower rates + avoid crowds during this time of the year. Whatever month you do visit, you can always watch sea turtles either nest or hatch (both happen year-round), go zip-lining (they do it rain or shine) + learn how to surf (waves are always good)! Things To KNOW English is spoken + understood in most tourist areas. Costa Rican currency is called, colon (CRC) but the U.S. dollar is accepted virtually everywhere. Tipping isn't greatly encouraged; however, it's greatly appreciated. Before tipping, look to see if the establishment already included a tip or "service charge," usually 10%, on your receipt. Buses are the best form of public transportation but if that's not your thing, cabs can be a budget-friendly way of getting around. Costa Rica's official taxis are red. You can tell they're authorized + licensed by the yellow triangle on the car's doors. Uber has been operating in Costa Rica for years; however, it's mostly limited to cities + tourist hotspots. If you're taking a taxi from the airport, however, look for the orange cars. These taxis are the only cabs authorized + licensed for airport pickups. MANUEL ANTONIO Where To STAY Si Como No Resort + Spa - This 40 room, very private hotel was opened by a former Hollywood producer. Built into a hillside in national parkland, Si Como No means, "Yes, Why Not?" There are views from every suite. Hotel Parador - Located in Punta Quepos, near Manuel Antonio. Hotel Parador is built on a peninsula overlooking the sea. It is a hacienda style hotel with about 60 rooms with views + porches + has a great infinity pool! Hotel Makanda By The Sea - An adults only resort where you can stay in a villa or studio. Discovery Beach House - Owned by wildlife photographers, DBH is a beautifully decorated (with personal art + photos from around the world) 3 bedroom, 4 bathroom rental property with direct oceanfront access. It's within walking distance of Manuel Antonio National Park. Housekeepers + a private chef are available for a seperate fee. Things To DO Manuel Antonio National Park - Ask for Alberto "Berto" Zuniga as your guide! Alberto is a local who also speaks perfect English + is super funny + knowledgeable. A 3 hour tour will run you about $35 per person. SAN JOSE Where To STAY Hacienda AltaGracia - An Auberge property + holistic well-being resort in the foothill mountains of Talamanca Mountains, home to The Well a holistic spa. Hotel Alta Las Palomas - An exclusive 23 room boutique hotel where rooms have balconies with expansive views of the valley + mountains. Be sure to eat at the hotel's restaurant, La Luz. Do a half day tour of Irazu + check out volcanoes + rainforests! As for beaches, the weather is drier on the Pacific side. Vida Mía Healing Center & Spa - One of the best places to indulge is at The Retreat just outside of San José. It sits atop a "high vibrational crystal mountain" + was named the "Best Spa in the Americas." Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen - A 16th century colonial hacienda style hotel built within a 30 acre working coffee plantation.
