I will always have fond memories of growing up in “Da Bronx” in the 1950’s. It is an experience that is best described as an extraordinary moment in time. "Da Bronx" was a true melting pot consisting of a multitude of ethnic groups who co-existed in towering walk up tenements.

The days were filled with activities that every young kid enjoyed like playing stickball in the middle of the street or preparing for downhill street races using orange crates and skates attached to a 2 by 4. My friends and I also had fun horsing around playing "Johnny on the Pony" and "Skully" with crayons melted in bottle caps. These were all activities that kept us busy until night.

We all spent time hanging around the stoop discussing the issues of the day. Those were easier times when politics and wars were the furthest thing from our minds and TV news anchors kept their opinions to themselves and just reported the news. On summer nights, we had impromptu parties on what we famously called “Tar Beach” which was the rooftop of the tenement building. The fire escapes provided a cool place to sleep on the hot steamy nights.

The mixed aromas of the exotic foods being prepared for dinner each evening filled the air throughout the neighborhood.

Voices of mom’s calling out from their windows to their children to come home for dinner was a daily ritual.

Saturday afternoon was spent with my Mom, food shopping at the market on Arthur Avenue and carrying the bags of food home. Afterwards, we rewarded ourselves with a slice of pizza at The Half Moon Pizzeria.

We all looked forward to Saturday night when the local church dance would be held in their auditorium. The formation of the girls standing together on one side and the boys on the other side of the dance floor gave everyone the opportunity to select who they wanted to dance with that night. The chaperones would keep a keen eye on the slow dancers, reminding them to make room for the Holy Ghost. The fast dancing resembled everyone appearing to have an out of body experience.

If you had a date on Saturday, the local movie theater was an option either at the RKO Fordham or the majestic Paradise Theater on the Grand Concourse with it’s grand staircase and ceiling which appeared to reach to the heavens with thousands of sparkling stars.

The evening would not be complete without taking your date to Jahn's Ice Cream parlor and ordering a “Kitchen Sink” which consisted of a scoop of ice cream of every flavor topped with bananas, cherries, sprinkles and whip cream!

Sunday morning was set aside for early Mass and dressing up with the clothes that our parents bought for us every year for Easter Sunday. After Mass, we headed to the local bakery to pick up fresh Italian bread and pastries while Mom prepared dinner at exactly 2pm like clockwork. Attendance was mandatory.

Growing up in the "Da Bronx" is an experience that created the most talented and creative minds of our time. Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Stanley Kubrick, famed astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, movie directors and producers Penny and Garry Marshall, comic book writer, Stan Lee, actors, Alan Alda, Carl Reiner, Al Pacino, Kerry Washington, Ellen Barkin and Chazz Palminteri. These are just a handful of Bronxites among hundreds who contributed their talents.

I am so blessed to have grown up in an environment that has taught me how the simple things in life can make you happy and the diversity of friendships will last a lifetime.

Insomnia has been a struggle for me the majority of my life and of course a pandemic hasn’t helped matters. Sleep is a precious opportunity for your body and brain to detoxify, repair and grow stronger. Not getting enough sleep can lead to both short term and long term consequences that will impair ones health and well-being. Just like you need food to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we need good sleep hygiene.

Between 1am-3am is the "time of the liver" and the time when the body should be asleep. During this time, toxins are released from the body and fresh new blood is made.

I'd like to share with you the following tips below that I have started incorporating into my nighttime sleep routine:

  • PUT YOUR F*!KING PHONE AWAY - Put your phone away an hour before you're getting ready to go to bed. For me, I have to take a stronger approach and I need to leave my phone outside of my bedroom or I will pick it up if I cannot sleep and will scroll all night long. I realize for some people that is not an option, so do what works for you.

  • BLUE LIGHT BLOCKING EYE GLASSES - If you do not already have them, purchase a pair of blue light blocking eye glasses ASAP! I just ordered a new pair from Warby Parker so if you don't have a pair, I suggest checking out their fantastic selection here.

  • MAGNESIUM - Before taking either of these, you should consult with your doctor first. I was taking 0.5mg of Ativan prescribed by my doctor (as needed) but I really want to work on my sleep hygiene without the aid of the Ativan and instead try a more holistic approach. If you don't want to take magnesium orally, Trace Minerals makes a Pure Magnesium Oil that you can lightly mist on your body to relax.

  • CBD - As for CBD, I like the brand, Veritas Farms. They make full spectrum CBD and are third party independently tested and 100% grown in Colorado. The flavors I like are the watermelon and peppermint flavor tinctures. Tinctures are a great way to administer herbs because it bypasses the GI tract and circumvents gut absorption issues.

  • GIVE YOURSELF A BEDTIME - I'm training myself to be in bed between 9pm-10pm. It's important to stick to a sleep schedule and proper bedtime.

ree
  • RELAXATION WITH MEDITATION + GENTLE STRETCHING - I'm realizing that hopping directly into bed after watching tv or a movie doesn't work for me. I need to unwind in a different way. My mind is still too stimulated by screen time, so I'm starting to incorporate meditation and gentle stretching prior to bed. Gentle "yin" yoga poses are great to slow your heart rate, giving you a gentle stretch for a better sleep. I've also been listening to this sleep music below. It's called "Enter The Astral Realm / 432 Hz Deep Lucid Dreaming Sleep Music," by Astral Circle.

If guided meditation is your thing or you would like to give it a try, this "Guided Meditation Hypnosis for Sleeping" by Jonathan Stephenson below may help.

  • SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE UPON WAKING - Seasonal depression ( I'm officially over these east coast winters ) + clinical depression + a pandemic + OCD + clinical anxiety has been a recipe for disaster. Since I'm no longer living in California or Florida where it is typically an "endless summer" the majority of the year, I'm looking into getting a red light box. Red light has been shown to help people sleep better and can positively impact your circadian rhythm. Sick of feeling strained and inflamed? Red light therapy also has the potential to greatly reduce joint pain, inflammation and so many other health benefits. The following brands make red light boxes in various sizes and price points: Biolight / Sauna Space / GembaRed . It is important to consult with your doctor and seek their professional medical advice before trying red light therapy.

As a rich source of vitamins, minerals + fiber, chickpeas may offer a variety of health benefits, such as improving digestion, aiding weight management + reducing the risk of several diseases. Additionally, chickpeas are high in protein + make an excellent replacement for meat in vegetarian + vegan diets.

I personally prefer not to use liquid smoke in this recipe, so I left that as optional for you. But, I do love Annie’s vegan Worcestershire sauce which is key. It gives it a smoky, sweet, savory flavor with a delicious tang. My brother + father (both meat eaters) took a bite + said it tastes like real meatloaf...but even better!

Whether you are a meat lover or not, this dish is for you!

I love that this recipe is so healthy! It is so easy to create simple, yummy dishes that taste like the real deal. The homemade tomato glaze is absolutely mouth watering! It is a healthy, yummy all natural ketchup made without refined sugar.

Ingredients:

Loaf

○ 2 tsp coconut oil (I use: Dr. Bronner's)
○ 1/4 Cup of (chopped) red onion
○ 2 stalks celery (chopped)
○ 5 cloves garlic (minced)
○ 15 oz. can of chickpeas, drained + rinsed
○ 1 3/4 Cup of blended cooked mushrooms (cook then food process)
○ 2 tablespoons liquid smoke (Optional)
○ 3 tsp Annie’s vegan Worcestershire sauce
○ 1 1/4 Cup of stale gluten free breadcrumbs (I use: Food For Life: Ezekiel bread or Silver Hills Bakery, both at Whole Foods)
○ 1/2 tsp sea salt
○ 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
○ 2 flax eggs (I use: pasture raised Vital Farms brand - brown box + mix with ground flax-meal)
○ 3 tbs organic tomato paste
○ 3/4 tsp thyme (I use: Simply Organic brand but you can use fresh if you prefer)

Homemade Ketchup Glaze

○ 2 tbs organic (no sugar added) tomato paste
○ 1 tsp maple syrup (I use: 365 brand, Dark Maple Syrup)
○ 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
○ 1 tsp Amy's vegan worcestershire sauce
○ 1/4 tsp sea salt

ree

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a loaf pan with coconut oil. It's definitely a good idea to line the pan with parchment paper, so it is easier to remove the loaf.

2. On a skillet, heat up coconut oil. Add garlic, red onions + celery. Saute until the onions are translucent + the celery is soft, so about 5 minutes.

3. In a large mixing bowl, add all of the ingredients, except the mushrooms. Gently toss until everything is coated. Then add in a food processor + pulse. Add in the mushrooms when everything is ~almost done~. You do not want to over pulse because it will turn into mush. You want to see chunks.

4. Add mixture into pan. Smooth down the top with a spatula then add the tomato glaze. Bake for about 45-60 minutes. Check with a toothpick or fork. If it comes out mostly clean then it is ready.

5. Remove from the oven + give it about 30 minutes too cool. Slice + enjoy!

I'd love to see you make this recipe and tell me how it turned out!
